The development of IoT has fastened the connection between “people to people”, “people to things “and “things to things”. Recently, the application of IoT has amplified and continues to change our life everywhere. Smart home is one of common scene of IoT application.
According to Home Automation Association, the definition of smart home is “The use of control systems and information technologies to make our home more comfortable, safe and efficient.” IDC survey shows and until 2022, the volume of smart home devices raised to 93 billion, which CAGR is up to 18%, and market value can reach $US 300 billion.

If the smart home market looked brightly, why didn’t it grow dramatically? In fact, smart home was not only an Internet connection device; it must combine hardware and software equipment by providing key solutions to bring in the economic profit.
So, what did the” key solution” mean? Taking our previous successful cases-ZTRON for example, the core business of ZTRON was to develop smart home system and IoT platform. However, ZTRON was hard to provide real IoT service because they didn’t have appropriate equipment to collect and analyze the data.
It was easy to build up the Mobile App with remote control function, but most Z-WAVE remote controls did not support MQTT and it was hard to collect device data through Z-WAVE. Moreover, Mobile App couldn’t reflect the real device status and frequently display error messages. That was the reason why ZTRO wants to build up an IoT device management protocol to collect the data from devices so that they could accelerate the consumer experience with intelligent technology.
Knowing the challenge our customers had encountered, we built up an IoT management platform based on AWS IoT. AWS IoT Core service could support billions of devices and trillions of messages. Also, it was able to transfer these messages to AWS safely. Customer could track all the devices and communicate on their apps, even it was disconnected with the Internet. Its serverless infrastructure included Amazon DynamoDB and Amazon Cognito. We built up a container on Amazon ECS as a socket server to communicate with remote controls and redesigning the Z-WAVE remote controls to support MQTT. Therefore, the remote controls would be able to connect AWS IoT services smoothly. In addition, clients could collect status information and set up the status with MQTT from device side, end user side, management platform and PMS (Property Management System) developed by ZTRON any time, even if the device was disconnected to the Internet.
Besides, the IoT management platform based on AWS IoT Core service could automatically deploy AWS infrastructure in less than one minute with AWS CloudFormation, which could significantly shorten deployment time and processes. At the same time, customers could use AWS IAM Role to control access-using policies and manage IoT device, even updated OTA on the platform. All the operations would automatically link to the customer’s AWS account (AWS IoT Core、AWS Lambda、Amazon DynamoDB、Amazon S3、Amazon SNS and Amazon Cognito…etc.). The IoT platform had integrated complete API for customers to connect end users APP and business logic system, shortening the time of program development and using the fastest way providing value added service to end users.
Our solution not only solved the device connectivity issues with AWS IoT services, reduced operation time and cost, but also integrated Amazon Cognito service of app end user, fulfilled user subscribe, log in, access and control. It combined user database and upload it on the cloud to apply on precise behaviour analyzes. Most of all, our customer could fully keep these data asset in the company, and didn’t need to worry about data outflow.
IoT had made our life much easier and innovative, and more diversified on application. By implementing key solution could we collect data effectively, conduct complex analytics and took action in the right time. Simply connecting devices to the Internet and collecting the data was not enough. The business value of IoT came from knowing how, when, and where to use the data in value-adding ways.
