PETRA

About Petra

Petra Energy, established in 1988, is an integrated brown field service provider for the upstream oil and gas industry. The company provides comprehensive range of integrated brown field maintenance & engineering; marine offshore support; design, fabrication supply & installation and engineering & project management services. Petra Energy is also involved in development and production activities of the Kapal Banang & Meranti cluster of small fields off-shore of Terengganu, Malaysia, under the small field risk service contract in partnership with Coastal Energy Company.

Petra Energy’s Challenge

Petra Energy existing landscape was under an unreliable managed services partner. This has led to a condition of no transparency on multiple layers, especially on infrastructure setup and landscape operation. Due to some subpar infrastructure security design, major security vectors were immediately identified.

Solutions from eCloudvalley

Petra Energy’s new SAP on AWS landscape is more thoroughly designed, with aspects of network communications, resource utilization transparency and security being part of the core principles. Adoption of ECloudvalley Migration Factory framework had supported the whole migration process, ensuring proper best practices all the way. Refactoring end-user and inter-system communication strategy had then introduced usage of SAProuter SNC and SAP Web Dispatcher into the whole landscape – bumping up the security level of Petra’s SAP systems.

Regained Operational Control Alongside Optimized Project Execution

The migration did not just gave Petra Energy full transparency and control over their operations, but also a more secure communication channels to and from their SAP systems. The carefully executed migration project itself was in fact completed within 3 weeks, instead the original 2 month planned timeline. Benefits of a well planned migration and well optimized infrastructure is directly reflected at multiple layers of the whole execution.

The Benefits

Simplifications and Streamlining of Procedure for Better Operation Adaptation

Petra Energy SAP workload migration to AWS did not just focus on the migration aspects, but also on  simplifications and streamlining on operational side. Aspects of backup and restore, alerting, systems monitoring, infrastructure security and access control are all improved and guided steps are provided by eCloudvalley, as to ensure full adoption and deep technical understanding of the benefits on having workloads running on AWS, for Petra Energy.

Security Refactoring Reduces Risks and Ensures Compliance

One major aspects that was improved in Petra Energy new SAP on AWS landscape was infrastructure security. Secure network communication, inter-systems as well as between end-clients are introduced, leveraging a properly configured AWS Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), with aspects of network segregations by means of private/public subnetting, and AWS VPN for establishing a reliable site-to-site tunnel, with network communications routed via SAProuter and SAP Web Dispatcher, ensuring no direct reachability to the backend applications and databases.

Properly Executed Managed Services Enhances Operation

To assist Petra Energy further, eCloudvalley is providing continual service improvement initiatives and technical consultation as part of eCloudvalley Managed Services (MS) offering. Access to eCloudvalley own MS Platform – ATLAS – provides Petra Energy with automated reports, maintenance activities scheduling and landscape usage trends, which in turn translates to improved security and cost optimization.
